Know Your Healthcare Costs in 2018

With the start of a new year comes a restart in health insurance deductibles and co-pays whether you have Medicare, employer health insurance or purchase your own coverage.  As part of your financial plan and budget, the beginning of the year is a good time to review your health care plan and understand what you pay each time you use your plan.

For routine health care – like vaccines or an annual exam – make your appointment early in the year.  That way if you have tests and follow ups that result from that appointment you’ve got a better chance of getting through your deductible and to a point where your plan may cover more of the cost of services.

If you are a Medicare beneficiary, here are the highlights and a link to the full 2018 Medicare costs at a glance.

Medicare 2018 Costs

Part A deductible (hospital)

$1,340 for each benefit period

Part A coinsurance

Days 1-60: $0 coinsurance for each benefit period

Part B deductible (doctors)

$183 per year.  After the deductible you typically pay 20% of the Medicare approved amount.

Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Deductibles, copayments and coinsurance vary by plan.  Check your plan for details.

Medicare Supplement Plans

Check your plan details for what deductible or copayments are covered by your plan.

Knowing how your health insurance plan works can help you save money.  And remember that many plan details change at the beginning of the year.  So January is a great time to review your plan coverage and costs and plan for any routine medical care.
